11/2/22 Processing of Kindred from beginning to pg. 131

The striking movement of the novel has kept me engaged. I do not typically get enthralled by books; however, Kindred has proven me different. I have been blown away by the contrast between the 1800s to the 1970s. Yes. I knew there were of course big changes in the two different time periods, yet viewing both eras interacting with each other from a futuristic perspective has been mind-boggling. The book has also kept me hooked through the characters. I just don't like Kevin. Something seems odd about him, and I feel as if Dana deserves better; I really like Dana's character. I love her courageous spirit, bravery, and resourcefulness. It feels weird for me to say I like Rufus...But I do. He seems so naive about the world around him and about thinking in different ways, it almost seems like Butler wanted us to be cheering on Rufus as he may (hopefully) (or may not...) grow to have a more modern, moral character. The other characters in the novel such as Alice, Weilyn, Miss Margret, and even Carrie are people I wish I could get to know more about individually in the novel. I am curious about Kevin’s whereabouts…I believe he went up North, remarried, and convinced himself of creating a life in the 1800s. This thought angers me, but it shouldn't. If I were in Kevin’s shoes, I would do the same thing. Besides, time seems to pass differently in the 1800s than it does in the 1970s…
